Analysis shows wood pellet fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by more than half over fossil fuels.

The Northern Forest Center commissioned a study of the greenhouse gas impacts of heating buildings with state-of-the-art wood pellet boilers. The Spatial Informatics Group-Natural Assets Laboratory (SIG-NAL) used data specific to the region’s forest composition and harvest practices, and the pellet sourcing and manufacturing of 9 out of 10 Northern Forest pellet mills, all of which produce pellets exclusively for thermal (heat) generation.

Mike Behn was in Boston, “on a mission.”
His assignment in that spring of 2005 was to essentially finish the work started by his boss, Bill (W.A.) Sandri, the previous Christmas to recruit Sandri’s son-in-law, Tim Van Epps, to be the next leader of the Greenfield-based Sandri family of companies. At the time, the enterprise was known for its gas stations stretched across Western Mass., New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire, but was also dabbling in everything from golf courses to real estate.
Behn, who was then running the motor-fuels division for the company and is now COO, didn’t believe this would necessarily be a hard sell, but he understood that he had some work to do to bring Van Epps west. After all, the then-29-year-old had a highly lucrative job managing a portfolio for Mellon Financial, and was clearly enjoying life in New England’s largest city.

This Third-generation Company Has a History of Innovation

It all started in 1931, with the leasing of a tiny gas station on Main Street in downtown Greenfield. Over the next eight decades, the company started by A.R. Sandri, later to be led by his son, William, and, today, grandson-in-law Tim Van Epps, has diversified into everything from heating oil to golf courses; from wood pellets and stoves to photovoltaic installations. The common threads among the generations are an entrepreneurial spirit, a willingness to take calculated risks, and an ability to anticipate needed services and then provide them.
